Make sure you enjoy the day too

We plan everything for them. The food, the snacks, the water guns, the things that make the day special. We try to give our kids experiences — the park, the library, an afternoon at home that still feels like something.

And somewhere in all that planning, there is a question we forget to ask: where is the part of this day that I enjoy?

It doesn't matter what you do with your day. Make sure you create a way to enjoy it too.

For me, the way I feel a day was good is simple: I felt myself growing. A little progress — in my body, my mind, my work, myself. Not big things. Little ones.

So now, when I pack the park bag, I pack for two people: for my son, and for me. His snacks — and a snack I actually like. His toys — and my book, the one that feeds my project. My earphones for a podcast. My resistance bands. Sometimes the mat, so I can simply lie down and look up.

And here is the order that makes it work: presence first. We play together — really together. Then, when he drifts into his own world to explore, that window opens. Ten minutes of reading. Five minutes of doing absolutely nothing except breathing and noticing where I am and what I have.

From that place of appreciation, even the overwhelming little tasks feel different. I write two lines in my notes about what comes next, and suddenly there's a plan where there used to be a knot.

Design the day, don't just survive it

At the end of a day like that, I don't feel drained from the sixty trips to the park. I feel a quiet sense of progression — and my son didn't get less of me. He got a better version of me. And he got something else, too: the example.

Your children don't only experience what you give them. They experience the example of how you live.

Things don't just happen. You make them happen — in the little details. The book that lives by the front door because you know that if it's upstairs, you won't go get it. The bands that stay in the stroller. The snack packed next to theirs.

Design your day. Put the little things where the day already happens. Over time, those little things build you.
